REPENT AND BELIEVE

WHAT IS REPENTANCE?

Repentance is to change your mind. More than feeling sorry or remorseful about something, repentance is to change your mind and heart about something leading to a change in action.

TO WHOM ARE WE REPENTING?

We are repenting to God, the Creator of all things. The One who created us in His likeness and image with tremendous value and purpose.

OF WHAT ARE WE REPENTING?

We are repenting of sin and unbelief. Sin is any thought or action that falls short of God's will. Another definition for sin is to miss the mark. When we sin, we miss the mark of God's perfect moral standard. In addition to repenting of sin, we repent of unbelief in Jesus Christ.

WHY MUST WE REPENT?

We must repent in order to come into agreement with God. God is a holy God who hates sin, and He is going to judge sin on His appointed time. He will end sin once and for all. Repentance of sin is a sign of humility. It is our humble expression of submission to God and acceptance of His moral standard.

When we repent and believe in Jesus Christ, God gives us His Holy Spirit so that we receive new life in Him. By the power of His Holy Spirit, we become one with Him and we are able to live a life that pleases Him and benefits us. Not only does God's Holy Spirit help us live a life that pleases Him in the here and now, but His Holy Spirit also serves as a down payment for eternal life.

How is this picture of repentance and reconciliation to God sparked? This is the saving power of the gospel.

An eternally sovereign God created the heavens, the earth, the seas, and all that is in them. He made the birds of the air, the creatures of the sea, and the animals that walk the earth. And at the height of His creation, He made man, male and female, in His own image and likeness. God placed them in the midst of His creation to steward it, to subdue it, and to exercise dominion over it according to His divine design.

God joined the man and woman as husband and wife and gave them a shared mission: to be fruitful and multiply, to fill the earth and care for it as His image-bearers. He generously provided everything they needed. Yet in the middle of this abundance, He gave them one clear command: not to eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. He warned them that if they did, they would surely die.

Within the freedom of Eden, this was the one boundary, a loving boundary from a holy God. But the serpent, Satan, came to the woman and deceived her, twisting God’s words and luring her to eat what had been forbidden. She ate and gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate also. In that moment, sin entered the world through one man’s disobedience—and with it came death, decay, and separation from God.

They lost their innocent standing before God, and sin corrupted not just their hearts but all of creation. Through that one act, the world became subject to suffering, sickness, and every kind of evil. Humanity, influenced by sin, would multiply destruction and chaos from generation to generation.

Because of this fallen state, every human being is born with a sinful nature, inclined to rebel against the God who made us. And yet, a day is coming when God will judge the world in righteousness. His wrath will be poured out, not arbitrarily, but justly against all sin. No one will escape His judgment, because all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23). God is holy. He is without sin. He hates sin and will judge it. The wages of sin is death—both physical and spiritual.

This is the just sentence upon a sinful world. But in the midst of this grim reality comes the greatest news ever declared: For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life (John 3:16).

In love, God sent His Son, Jesus Christ—born of a virgin, fully God and fully man. He lived a sinless life we could never live and died a death we deserved. On the cross, He bore the full weight of God’s wrath against sin, becoming the once-for-all sacrifice to reconcile us to God. He was crucified, buried, and rose again on the third day, defeating death and securing victory for all who believe.

Jesus now sits at the right hand of the Father, exalted in glory, holding the only name under heaven by which we must be saved (Acts 4:12). On the cross, He became sin for us, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God (2 Corinthians 5:21). Through faith in Him, we are forgiven and promised eternal life.

It is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment (Hebrews 9:27). Physical death is certain. But because of Jesus, spiritual death, eternal separation from God, can be overcome. Those who reject Christ will face this eternal separation in a place of torment. But those who receive Him are given eternal life and peace with God.

By one man’s disobedience, sin entered the world and death through sin. But by the obedience of one man, Jesus Christ, grace and salvation have been offered to all who believe.

This is the love and grace of God. This is the good news of Jesus Christ. This is the gospel. So, repent of your sins and believe in the gospel for your salvation today!

For That One Ministries exists to bring fame to Jesus' name. He is the Way, the Truth, and the Life and no one comes to the Father but through Him. He is our Salvation. He is our God. And if we repent and believe in Him and His finished work of salvation for our lives, we receive forgiveness and the promise of eternal life. Inspired by the parable of the lost sheep we point the lost to Jesus Christ, knowing there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous people who don't need repentance.
